She grew up in Centereach, Long Island. While in high school, she was a competitive debater and won the New York State Tournament of Champions in 1998. Mina went on to attend Brandeis University, where she was an editor of the school paper and graduated magna cum laude with a degree in English literature.

Mina Kimes met her husband, Chris Ballard, during a routine tour of the sports department at The Wall Street Journal. They started dating after only a few months, got engaged after about three months of dating, and tied the knot on June 8, 2009, at Saint Mary the Virgin in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
